Questions
Frequently asked
Do I need to mail my original document?
No. In the vast majority of cases, you upload a clear color scan. Our licensed notary certifies it as a true copy of the original, and the Secretary of State issues the apostille on the notary-certified copy. Your original never has to leave your possession, and there's no risk of it being lost in transit.
Can a notary do an apostille?
No. A notary can certify signatures and true copies, but only a government authority — the Secretary of State or the US Department of State — can issue an apostille. Most notaries don't handle apostilles directly. We do: we handle the notarization step where needed, then submit to the appropriate government authority on your behalf.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a government certification that makes your US document legally valid in 120+ countries. It's issued under the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention and is required for international use of birth certificates, diplomas, background checks, and other official documents. Think of it as an international stamp of authenticity.
How long does it take to get an apostille?
With our service: Economy is 4–6 business days, Priority is 2–3 business days, and Express is 1 business day. If you were to do it yourself by mail through the Secretary of State, typical turnaround is 2–3 months. In-person drop-off at a state SOS office offers same-day service but requires you to physically go there during limited hours.
Which countries accept apostilles?
Over 120 countries accept apostilles under the Hague Convention, including all European Union countries, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, UAE, and many others. If your destination country is not a Hague member, you'll need embassy legalization instead — contact us and we'll advise on the right path.
